PITTSBURGH -- Aramis Ramirezs first home run came so long ago he can barely remember it. . "I know I was just a kid, a 19-year-old kid," the Milwaukee Brewers third baseman said. Ramirez had three hits, including his 350th career home run, and drove in four runs to lead the Milwaukee Brewers over the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-6 on Tuesday night. Coincidentally, No. 350 came just a short walk from where he hit his first -- which also came against his current team. Playing for the Pirates on June 12, 1998, Ramirez took Milwaukees Scott Karl deep at Three Rivers Stadium. The 16-year veteran third baseman helped stake the Brewers to a 5-0 lead in the fifth inning, but the Pirates rallied to tie it in the sixth. But Milwaukee pulled out the win when rookie pinch-hitter Caleb Gindl hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the eighth inning. "If you would have told me back when I was 19 that Id hit at least 350 home runs in my career, I would have taken that," Ramirez said. "I was a kid then and Im an old man now but it just goes to show you that if you play long enough you can put up some numbers." The Brewers won their third in four games while handing the Pirates their third straight loss. Pittsburgh dropped 1 1/2 games behind St. Louis in the NL Central after the Cardinals beat Cincinnati 6-1. With the game tied 6-6, Rafael Betancourt hit a one-out double off Bryan Morris (5-7) and took third on Scooter Gennetts single. Gindl then lifted a fly to right that scored Betancourt. Milwaukees Norichka Aoki reached base in all five plate appearances, with two singles and three walks. Jonathan Lucroy added three hits, and Gennett had two. "I like what were doing offensively," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "That was an outstanding offensive performance." Pedro Alvarez went 4-for-4 with a walk, and hit his NL-leading 32nd home run for the Pirates. Neil Walker had a three-run homer among his two hits. Andrew McCutchen, Andrew Lambo and Felix Pie also had two hits. Earlier Tuesday, the Pirates acquired right fielder Marlon Byrd and catcher John Buck from the New York Mets to bolster an offence that ranks 24th in the major leagues in runs. Both players are expected to join the team on Wednesday. With the Pirates down by a run, McCutchen doubled and Alvarez walked with one out in the ninth, but Jim Henderson held on for his 22nd save in 25 opportunities. Rob Wooten (3-0) allowed Alvarezs homer but pitched 1 1-3 innings for the win. "It was as strange game. Real strange," Walker said. "Back and forth, back and forth. But it was no different than what weve played all year. Down 5-0, a lot of teams pack it in. But we have a lot of heart and nobodys throwing in the towel until the last out." Both starting pitchers had rough outings. The Brewers Kyle Lohse gave up five runs and 13 hits in 5 1-3 innings. Pirates All-Star left-hander Jeff Locke was tagged for five runs and eight hits in 4 2-3 innings. Lohse had been 4-1 with a 2.05 ERA in seven starts since the All-Star break. Locke has struggled of late, allowing 16 runs and 23 hits in 11 1-3 innings in his last three starts. Over his last seven outings, he is 0-2 with a 7.02 ERA. Alvarez tied it 6-6 by lining a solo home run off the right-field foul pole, snapping a tie with Arizonas Paul Goldschmidt for the league lead. "Alvarez is hot and he just smoked that ball," Roenicke said. Milwaukee had gone ahead by a run in top of the inning when Ramirez lined a two-out RBI double to centre that scored Lucroy, who had singled. A first-inning run scored when Ramirez grounded into a double play. He hit a solo home run, his eighth of the season, with one out in the fourth. After Lucroy hit a two-out RBI single in the fourth, Ramirez followed with a two-run double that put the Brewers up 5-0. The Pirates came back to tie it with four runs in the fifth and one in the sixth. Pie drove in the first run with a pinch-hit double that bounced off Aokis glove in right field and, one batter later, Walker hit his ninth home run, a three-run shot that carried over the right-field stands. Lohse grabbed his head and shouted an obscenity when Aoki failed to make the play. "You cant afford to give a team like the Pirates second chances and theyll take advantage, which they did because I didnt make pitches after that," Lohse said. "I let the inning get away from me there but fortunately we were able to still win." Pie, who remained in the game to play left field, made it 5-5 in the sixth with a run-scoring single but the Pirates were never able to gain a lead. "Its a good win for us," Ramirez said. "Were in fourth place (in the NL Central) and were not going to playoffs but its fun to play teams that are going to the playoffs. These felt like a playoff game." The bout served as the headlining matchup of Saturdays "UFC Fight Night: Brown vs. Silva" event, which took place at U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati. It was Silva who looked well on his way to victory in the early going, delivering a pair of crushing kicks to the body that sent Brown crashing to the floor, doubled over in pain. But as Silva swarmed for the finish, first with strikes and then with a choke attempt, Brown somehow gutted through the onslaught and worked back to his feet. From there, it was a matter of time. Brown shook off the pain and returned fire with punches, kicks and elbows from all angles. To his credit, Silva survived the onslaught for the remainder of the first round, not to mention the entirety of the second frame, as well. Silva showed occasional signs of a comeback, as every body shot caused Brown to momentarily wince. But Browns momentum was too great and his pressure too relentless. Philippou was firing heavy leather with his crisp boxing, while Larkin answered in kind while also missing in snapping kick to the legs. But as Philippou closed the range, he nullified some of Larkins tools, and thats when he unleashed his biggest shots. A left hand wobbled Larkin, and a right hand put him out cold at the 3:47 mark, snapping a disappointing two-fight losing streak for Philippou. "It was a big win for me," Philippou said. "It followed two very disappointing losses. Before my last fight, I wasnt sure if I wanted to keep fighting, and it showed. I looked awful. But the UFC called and gave me another shot." Lightweight striker Daron Cruickshank (15-4) scored a first-round finish of Erik Koch (14-4). It was Koch who held the centre of the cage andd looked to use his range to pick apart his opponents legs. . Unfortunately for Koch, Cruickshank walked through the blows and delivered a stunning left high kick that sent his opponent toppling to the canvas. Cruickshank immediately pounced with a non-stop barrage of punches and elbows that forced a merciful stop at the 3:21 mark of the first. "Its a great night for me," Cruickshank said after the win. "I showed up. When I show up, I can beat anyone. I know I belong among the best in my division, and I think I proved that tonight." In a battle of rangy welterweights, Neil Magny (10-3) started quickly then survived some late trouble to battle back for a hard-fought decision win over Tim Means (20-6-1). As two of the taller fighters in the division, both struggled to settle into a comfortable range. The back-and-forth action left the fight hanging in the balance in the final frame. Means started strong, hurting Magny with an early barrage of knees. But Magny survived the onslaught and battled back to score a takedown, stifling his opponent for the remainder of the round and edging out Means for a decision win with scores of 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28. "Having to adjust to a guy who is as long or longer than me was an adjustment for me," Magny said. "Hes a hard guy to find a training partner for, difficult to imitate, but Im happy with the win. It just puts me in place to keep climbing." In heavyweight action, Australian Soa "The Hulk" Palelei (21-3) ran his winning streak to 11 fights with a crushing first-round defeat of South African UFC newcomer Ruan "Fangzz" Potts (8-2). While Potts was considered the superior grappler, Palelei took him to the floor in the early going and quickly moved to mount, where a perfectly placed left hand put his opponent to sleep at the 2:20 mark of the first round. "I think the hard work and my good coaches have helped," Palelei said. "Relentless training is the key. Ive been working hard and want to prove to everyone that I belong in the UFC." In the nights first main-card matchup, flyweight Chris Cariaso (17-5) handed highly-touted prospect Louis Smolka (7-1) his first career defeat. While Cariaso was the smaller man in the cage, his aggressive attacks throughout the bout, coupled with a strong submission game that saw him threaten to finish the fight on a few occasions, were enough to earn him a hard-fought split-decision win. "I was looking for submissions all the time," Cariaso said after the win. "When guys get low, they get susceptible to submissions, so I tried for them.
